July 30, 2026 โ Bridging the gap between scientific research and responsible journalism, Ferrerians from the ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฆ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ (๐๐๐) and ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐, ๐๐๐๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ (๐๐๐) gained firsthand exposure to nutrition research and science communication during the second day of the ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ฏ๐จ๐๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ซ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ฉ๐ฌ๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฆ (๐๐๐๐๐๐๐) ๐๐๐๐ at the ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ โ ๐ ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ (๐๐๐๐-๐ ๐๐๐).
The day’s activities centered on providing participants with an immersive understanding of how scientific discoveries are generated, communicated, and translated into stories that educate and inform the public. Through guided site visits, the delegates explored the ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ง๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐๐ฌ (๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ง) ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ and the ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ก๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ, where they observed laboratory equipment, learned about ongoing research initiatives, and gained valuable insights into the technologies and processes that support nutrition and health research in the country.
The learning experience was further enriched through interviews with ๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐ซ๐ค ๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ณ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐, Science Research Specialist II and Head of the NuGen Laboratory, and ๐๐ซ. ๐๐จ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐จ ๐๐๐ง, Senior Science Research Specialist at DOST-FNRI and current Board Director of the Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP) for Public Health. Their discussions introduced the students to the emerging field of nutrigenomics, the science behind nutrition physiology, and the vital role of science communication in making research findings relevant and accessible to communities.
Putting theory into practice, the Ferrerian delegates participated in a science communication workshop where they were tasked to produce a science news article, a science feature article, three documentary photographs with corresponding captions, and a social media reel based on their field visit to the Nutrigenomics and Nutrition Physiology laboratories. The activity challenged the students to apply the principles of news writing, feature writing, photojournalism, and multimedia storytelling in communicating scientific information accurately and effectively.
Accompanying the delegates throughout the program are the school’s paper advisers, ๐๐ฌ. ๐๐๐๐จ๐ง๐ง๐ ๐. ๐ ๐๐ซ๐ซ๐๐ซ, ๐๐ฌ. ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐. ๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ฅ๐๐ง, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฉ๐ก ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐ . ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฃ๐ข๐ฌ, with the full support of ๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐ซ๐ค ๐๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง ๐. ๐๐ซ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ, Principal IV, whose continued commitment to experiential learning enables Ferrerians to expand their knowledge and sharpen their skills beyond the classroom.
